Use of English - FCE Tips

🎓 FCE Use of English – Master This Section!

The Use of English section tests your grammar and vocabulary. It has 4 parts:

📘 Part 1 – Multiple Choice Cloze

In this task, you choose the best word (A, B, C, or D) to complete a sentence in a short text. It tests your knowledge of collocations, phrasal verbs, and fixed expressions.

🎯 TIP: Read the full sentence and the whole paragraph before answering. Context helps!
EXAMPLE:
I couldn’t ________ the chance to travel abroad.
A) miss B) lose C) fail D) pass
✅ Correct answer: A) miss the chance

📗 Part 2 – Open Cloze

This task is similar to Part 1, but you must write the missing word. It usually focuses on grammar words: articles, prepositions, auxiliary verbs, etc.

🎯 TIP: Watch out for conditionals, modals, and linking words like "although", "even though", "because".
EXAMPLE:
I don’t know ____ I’ll be free tomorrow.
✅ Correct answer: if

📕 Part 3 – Word Formation

Here you have to change a given word to complete a sentence correctly. You may have to change its form: noun, verb, adjective, or adverb.

🎯 TIP: Practice prefixes and suffixes like un-, re-, -ment, -ness, -able.
EXAMPLE:
She was full of ________ during the exam. (NERVE)
✅ Correct answer: nervousness

📙 Part 4 – Key Word Transformation

In this part, you rewrite a sentence using a key word so that it means the same. You must use 2–5 words including the given key word.

🎯 TIP: Don't change the key word and keep the same meaning. Check verb tenses!
EXAMPLE:
I last saw her two months ago. (FOR)
✅ Correct: I haven’t seen her for two months.

📚 Useful Vocabulary to Study

  • Prefixes: un-, dis-, re-, mis-
  • Suffixes: -ment, -ness, -ity, -able
  • Common phrasal verbs: give up, look after, turn down
  • Linking words: although, despite, moreover, however

  • There are 6 questions in the transformation task.
  • Use of English + Reading = 1 hour 15 minutes total.
  • Each correct answer = 1 mark. Every point matters!

Read a lot in English – articles, blogs, and short stories. You will improve your grammar without even realizing!
